Earlier this year, I was given a quick assignment for a local magazine to photograph the brand new statue at the capitol. Vel Philips made a bit of history here in Wisconsin. She was the first African American woman to graduate from the University of Wisconsin Law School She was also the first African American, as well as the first woman, elected Alderwoman to the Milwaukee Common Council. AND the first African American, as well as the first woman, to serve as a jurist in Wisconsin. So, I think she absolutely deserves a statue to celebrate every single barrier she broke.
