It becomes a distraction…

Alright, I’m going to be honest, I’m completely guilty on this. Just a couple weeks ago the local camera store (so lucky to have one still.) had a photo walk. I tossed my 200-500 on my D500 for photos of birds. I put my 24-70 on my D810, then made sure my bag had my 85 prime, and 105 micro, and a speed light, and my tripod… You see what’s happening here, right?

It very quickly became a distraction to the photo making process. There is certainly something to be said about being prepared, but in a case like this, it’s too much. Here’s how it went down: When we started the walk I had what I said above, then I decided that I wanted to shoot my prime. Then, the macro. Then, my 70-200. Then back again. I spent so much time deciding what to use that I didn’t capture many images. I wasn’t as creative as I could have been. It was purely a distraction.

My advice, pick one or two things and limit yourself to them. Make yourself work around it. Doing so will help build your creative muscle by limiting yourself, but also by giving you more time to create. Plus, it’ll save you back. Just like a lot of things in life, too much can turn into a bad thing pretty quickly.
